Therapeutic Massage - 512 Hour Program 

General Description:  detailed syllabus available
This
512 hour course is designed to build on the student’s basic knowledge of massage therapy as taught first in the Primary Skills of Massage Therapy.  The student will then be presented with advanced Anatomy and Physiology, advanced Massage modalities, reflexology, chair massage, sports and infant massage techniques.  Includes hands-on instruction technique. 

Five 100-hour modules comprise the course.  The student must take the Primary Skills module first, then each module may be taken separately as your schedule permits.   

Prerequisite: High School Diploma, GED, or the equivalent. 

A pass/fail designation will be given on all written and clinical exams. To obtain a pass designation on written exams, a student must have a minimum of 75% correct answers on the exam.  All coursework and clinical hours are performed at the School under the supervision of our Instructors.

Module Description:

Primary Skills (112 Hours) 
 After completion of this subject the student will be able understand or perform:

     ·  Basic massage techniques and strokes
    
·  Maintain accurate records using proper medical terminology
    
·  Develop a plan of care
    
·  Understand and utilize sanitary techniques and hygiene
    
·  Evaluate patients for contraindications and indications

 Anatomy, Physiology and Pathology (100 Hours)     2 Parts

 Part 1 - Anatomy and Physiology of Body Systems (60 Hours)
After completion of this subject the student will be able understand or perform:

      ·  Understand and demonstrate foundations of clinical massage therapy, pain referral zone, and appropriate treatment.
·  Apply correct anatomical prefixes and suffixes appropriate for note-taking.
·  Demonstrate knowledge of anatomy and physiology appropriate to clinical massage.

 Part 2 - Pathology for the Massage Therapist (40 Hours)
After completion of this subject the student will be able understand or perform:

      ·  Understand and identify pathologies as they apply to massage therapy.
·  Understand indication and contraindication of specific pathologies as they apply to massage therapy.
·  Understand and apply abbreviations used for charting.
·  Demonstrate knowledge of anatomy and physiology appropriate to pathology.

 Sports Massage Techniques    (100 Hours)  
After completion of this subject the student will be able understand or perform:

      ·  Sports massage using techniques specific for the athlete.
·  Perform pre and post event sports massage.
·  Evaluate and massage clients with acute and post-acute injuries.
·  Evaluate and massage clients with musculoskeletal injuries.
·  Balance muscle tension with strain counter-strain technique.
·  Demonstrate knowledge of anatomy and physiology appropriate to sports massage.

Acupressure & Reflexology Massage (100 Hours)
After completion of this subject the student will be able understand or perform:

      ·  Body mapping.
·  Identifying reflexology points and acupressure points.
·  Developing protocol.
·  Understanding vital force, meridians, and reflexive conditions.
·  Understand and demonstrate treatment of acute and /or chronic conditions.
·  Demonstrate knowledge of anatomy and physiology appropriate to body reflexology massage.

 Clinical Remedial Massage Techniques (100 Hours)
After completion of this subject the student will be able understand or perform:

      ·  Hot stone massage.
·  Fibromyalgia massage.
·  Massage for carpal tunnel syndrome.
·  Lymphatic drainage massage.
·  Understand and demonstrate clinical remedial techniques.
·  Seated massage.
·  Infant massage.
·  Pregnancy massage.
·  Demonstrate knowledge of anatomy and physiology appropriate to clinical remedial massage techniques.
·  Business practices and care planning


Massage Skills Refresher – 100 hours
Choose from the list of modules available under Massage Therapy 512.  The primary skills module does not require prerequisites.

This course alone does not qualify for licensure in Illinois. 


Advanced Clinical Massage - 200 hours

General Description:  detailed syllabus available
This 2
00 hour course is designed for the student desiring to enhance their current massage skills and build a clinical practice.  The course is an evidence-based approach to assessing and treating myofascial dysfunction, using thumb-finger applications that are a proven method of releasing muscular tension.  The trigger point method will also be presented for the treatment of myofascial release.  The student will also learn about essential oils and their success in conjunction with therapeutic massage.  The components, safety, and proper application of essential oils and aromatherapy will be presented.  

NOTE:  This course not required for Licensure

SHORT COURSE
CranioSacral Therapy Introduction & Overview – 12 hours

General Description:  detailed syllabus available
This is a 12 hour short course conducted over a weekend.  Offered through the Upledger Institute, this course is approved for 12 CE Hours (continuing education) by IL DPR.  Presented twice per year, subjects include:

  • The foundation of the CranioSacral system

  • Techniques to affect change

  • Anatomy and physiology of the CranioSacral system

  • Developing light-touch skills

CranioSacral Therapy (CST) was developed by osteopathic physician John E Upledger.  CST is a gentle, hands-on method of evaluation and enhancing the function of a physiological body system called craniosacral system - comprised of the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect the brain - using a very soft, light touch to release restrictions in the craniosacral system and improve functioning of the central nervous system.


SHORT COURSE
Overview of Asian Medicine – 7 hours

This is a 7 hour short course conducted over a weekend.  This course is approved for 7 CE Hours (continuing education) by IL DPR.  Presented twice per year, subjects include:

  • History and basics of Chinese medicine and bodywork

  • Five elements theory

  • Shiatsu - theory, technique, and bodywork protocol

  • Differences in East/West approaches to Health and Wellness
